Abrams/Big Creek Pkwy Stormwater Basin

The project has made significant progress to date. The contractor has completed clearing and grubbing of the site, including tree removal, and has demolished and removed the existing infrastructure, including a wooden shed, fence, cleanouts, headwall, and pipe. They installed the outlet headwall at Big Creek Parkway and the outlet control structure, which was modified to function as a temporary sediment basin during construction. The outlet headwall and control structure were connected with the 3′ x 6′ reinforced concrete box culvert. The lower basin and micropool have been excavated, and the upper basin excavation is nearly complete. During excavation of the lower basin, unsuitable soils were encountered that were extremely wet and unstable. To address this, the contractor undercut these areas, placed stone to create a stable foundation, and capped the stone with clay. The upper and lower basins have also been connected with two headwalls and a 36-inch storm sewer pipe. In addition, the contractor has been stockpiling some of the larger rocks excavated on-site for reuse in the final landscaped areas.

The excavation work is now largely complete. However, because the site has limited space available, the contractor cannot fully complete the upper basin excavation at this time, as they need an area to store equipment and materials during the remainder of construction.

Throughout September, the contractor plans to respread topsoil throughout the basin, install fencing near the outlet headwall along Big Creek Parkway, place additional riprap, seed and straw the basin, and install the remaining storm sewer and manhole near Pearl Road.

The project is currently anticipated to be completed in October. Remaining activities include landscaping, planting trees and other vegetation, constructing the walking trail, pouring concrete for the sidewalk repair, cleaning up the site, and addressing any final punch list items.
