Middleburg Heights Expands Grant to Help Residents with Basement Flooding and Septic Systems

On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Mayor Matthew Castelli and Middleburg Heights City Council approved the expansion of the Middleburg Heights Sanitary Sewer Backup Reduction Grant to include sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and waterproofing projects, as well as household sewage treatment (septic) systems. The goal of the new Sewer, Septic, Waterproofing Assistance Grant (SSWAG) is to further assist residents with reducing the chances of basement “flooding” and the elimination of or improvements to private septic systems.

The Sewer, Septic, Waterproofing Assistance Grant (SSWAG) is available immediately.  All owner-occupied single-family dwellings in Middleburg Heights are eligible for this grant. SSWAG will reimburse homeowners 100% of project costs up to $3,000.00.  SSWAG is offered year-round on a first come / first served basis, until funds have been expended.

Examples of eligible projects include:

  • the elimination of sanitary sewer cross connections
  • the replacement of sanitary or storm sewer laterals
  • the lining of sanitary or storm sewer laterals
  • the repair of sanitary or storm sewer laterals
  • the installation of backwater prevention devices
  • septic to sanitary conversions
  • septic system replacement
  • waterproofing, and
  • other similar basement flooding protection measures approved by the City.

SSWAG applicants understand and agree to dye testing of their storm and sanitary sewers for proper connection to the public sewer collection system. Any deficiencies or illegal connections identified must be corrected prior to reimbursement and grant funds may be used for those repairs.
