During a campaign stop in Cleveland in 2008, John McCain stayed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Engle Road in Middleburg Heights and Mayor Gary W. Starr was there when John McCain arrived. The next day John McCain made a stop at Nova Machine Products in Middleburg Heights, a leading supplier of parts for nuclear power plants. John McCain met with the Mayor and his friends at Nova.
Mayor Starr stated “John McCain exhibited the straight talk and personal charm that has characterized his political style.”
Mayor Starr asked John McCain about personal attacks in politics and the lack of civility. John McCain’s comment to Mayor Starr was:
“We should be able to disagree without being disagreeable and still have respect for the other point of view.”
