The Recreation Department offers a variety of programs, activities & special events for the entire family, from children to senior citizens.

Sandy Balzer is the Adapted Recreation Coordinator for the  Recreation Department. Sandy recently retired from the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities with an extensive background in recreation programming for individuals with disabilities. She will help us expand on the  previous successful Adapted Sports for Kids Program (which was under the direction of Helga Sheppard, who was the ASK Director for over 25 years). Youth Fitness Classes

Tae Kwon Do

The first-time student should sign up for Tae Kwon Do, the art of self-defense using the hands and feet. The instructor is a 6th degree black belt master instructor and a 1st degree black belt in judo and is committed to focusing on the individual needs of each child. There is a uniform cost. Little Stars Gymnasticsrec35

This program is for girls & boys ages 18 months to 10 years old who are interested in learning the important fundamental skills of gymnastics. No prior experience is necessary! Activities such as balance beam, single bar, obstacle course & basic tumbling will be taught! The instructor, Sophia Porter,, is a USAG safety certified gymnastics instructor with over 17 years of teaching experience. Fitness Area


Our 3,300 square foot Fitness Area contains over 100 pieces of circuit training, free weights and plate loaded equipment. We also have a "cardio-theatre" system for watching TV while you're working out and a fully staffed fitness desk, complete with an AED machine for your safety.

Fitness attendants are glad to "show you the ropes." Members may track their progress on individually designed "workout logs" available at the desk. We also have certified personal trainers on staff to help you tailor your workout to your own needs!

Ultra Cycle

This 45-minute class is a challenging, fat-blasting workout that will take you thru leg sculpting hills and speed & resistance interval flats. Extreme Pump It Up Fitness

Tai Chi Chih

Kickbox Bootcamp

This is a cardio & strength training workouts set to heart-pumping music fused with a blend of cardio-dance, kickboxing and pilates. The focus is on shaping and toning the lower body and midsection. Head to toe workout incorporating cardio, strength training, and for all fitness levels. Cycle It Up

Twilight Yoga

This class is open to all fitness levels, those new to yoga or those with more experience. The class emphasizes marrying our breath to our movement, infused with gentle music to motivate your movements. We utilize vinyasa flow to build heat for the first half of class, with a cool down moon sequence and guided relaxation for the second half of class.

Kangoo Jumps

This is a low-impact exercise class using boots to promote fat loss, increase endurance, improve strength and balance, help correct posture & optimize cardiovascular health.

Yoga Basics

This candle- lit class combines slow flow, deep stretch, and proper alignment to bring you a peaceful and relaxing experience. SilverSneakers® Circuit

Combine fun and fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work using hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, head to toe stretching, and complete relaxation in a comfortable position.

SilverSneakers® Yoga

YogaStretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

SilverSneakers® Splash

Activate your aqua urge for variety! SilverSplash offers lots of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. No swimming ability is required, and a special SilverSneakers kickboard is used to develop strength, balance and coordination.

Dance Classes

Line Dancing

This class is for anyone who wants to learn how to line dance to various kinds of music; country, cha-cha, waltzes, polkas, etc. All ages are welcome and there is no residency requirement. The fee is just $2.50 per class.

Adaptive Recreation Program

The Adaptive Recreation Program formally known as A.S.K. is an award-winning series of recreational programs, geared towards serving individuals with disabilities of all ages, regardless of residency. Since 1991, under the direction of Middleburg Heights Recreation Department staff, the participants have been taught the fundamentals of sports, good sportsmanship and how to have FUN! Thanks to the generosity of the Kiwanis Club, Women’s Club and other local support, this innovative program continues our commitment to provide recreation activities to individuals of all abilities with the emphasis of fun & learning.

Programs/Classes FAQs

How old do you have to be to use the fitness area?

Children between the ages of 12-14 will be allowed to use the Nautilus & Cardio equipment if they are accompanied and supervised by an adult. No one under the age of 15 is allowed in the Free Weight area. No child under the age of 12 will be allowed on the track unless accompanied & supervised by an adult.

How many laps constitute a mile on the track?

Approximately 12 laps comprise one mile if you are in the outermost lane.

How long can I exercise on a piece of equipment?

During busy hours, we ask that you limit your time on a particular piece of equipment to 30 minutes.
