MAYOR GARY W. STARR AND THE CITY PARTNER WITH THE BEREA SCHOOL DISTRICT TO PUT POLICE OFFICERS (SRO) IN THE CITY’S SCHOOLS

Mayor Gary W. Starr’s plan for putting Middleburg Heights Police Officers inside Big Creek Elementary School and Berea-Midpark Middle School passed unanimously by the Berea School Board on Monday, August 13, 2018.

This next phase of “Operation Protect Our Children”, which was initiated by Mayor Starr in 2012, will involve the hiring of two School Resource Officers (SRO) to fulfill the roles inside our schools of law enforcement officer, teacher and counselor.

The duties of the School Resource Officer (SRO) will include assisting in providing a safe learning environment in the schools, providing valuable resources to school staff members, fostering positive relationships with youth, developing strategies to solve problems affecting youth and protecting all students so they can reach their fullest potential.

As Mayor Starr stated to the School Board:  “ there is very low risk involved in a tragic event occurring, but enormous consequences if it occurs.  Nothing can guarantee against Sandy Hook, Columbine or Concord, Ohio, but my plan will go a long way to make sure that Middleburg Heights is prepared, and for the parents, children, teachers and administrators to know that the safety of their schools and their children is my number one priority”.
