Every Fall after learning more about fire safety, children from the Academy of St. Bartholomew and Big Creek Elementary participate in an annual coloring contest creating posters of the important information they learned. Winners from each grade of this local contest are selected by the Middleburg Heights Fire Department. Only two winning entries are sent to the Fire Marshal’s office to compete in the State contest.

On Friday, February 3, members of the Middleburg Heights Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s office surprised Lillian Fuerst, 6th grader at the Academy of St. Bartholomew with the news that her poster was selected as a State winner. Lillian’s poster will be on display in the lobby of the State Fire Marshal’s office as well as on their website.

Posters by Nate Merritt and Lauren Lantow of Big Creek Elementary and Amber Zver of the Academy of St. Bartholomew were also entered in the State Contest.

All local winners are treated to lunch and Sundae bar at Max & Erma’s. Additionally, third graders may choose to participate in a contest sponsored by the North East Ohio Fire Prevention Association.
