New Stormwater Basin to Mitigate Flooding
To better manage stormwater and reduce flooding along Big Creek Parkway and residential streets off Pearl Road that drain toward Big Creek, construction of Basin 2 is set to begin in late summer or early fall.
This important project will manage runoff from approximately 68.2 acres of upstream residential land, all of which currently drains into this area. The basin itself will span 5.5 acres and is carefully engineered to control the flow of stormwater into Big Creek Parkway, helping to prevent downstream flooding.
Key features of the design include:
- A forebay located at the upstream (Pearl Road) side of the basin. This area will temporarily hold storm surge water, releasing it gradually to prevent overwhelming the downstream system. It will also help trap sediment and debris before they reach the main basin.
- A micropool at the downstream (Big Creek Parkway) side, acting as a final filter before the water enters the parkway ditch. This shallow pool will further improve water quality by capturing remaining sediment and debris.
In addition to its stormwater function, the project will include a walking path that runs alongside the basin, connecting Pearl Road to Big Creek Parkway—offering new recreational access for residents to enjoy.
Stay tuned for more updates as the project gets underway!
