PROMINENT CITY OF CLEVELAND DEPUTY CHIEF EDWARD J. TOMBA APPOINTED AS NEW CHIEF OF POLICE FOR THE CITY OF MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS

It is with great pleasure that Mayor Gary W. Starr announces the appointment of Edward J. Tomba as the new Police Chief for the city of Middleburg Heights. Edward Tomba is the Deputy Chief, Homeland Security and Special Operations with the city of Cleveland Police Department.

During Ed Tomba’s standout career as a police officer in the city of Cleveland, he has received numerous awards and commendations including, graduate of the FBI National Training Academy in Quantico, VA (209th session), honored as the Police Officer of the Year for 2016 by the Cleveland Police Foundation, honored by the FBI with the Unsung Hero Award in 2013 and awarded the “Medal of Valor” by the Cleveland Rotary Club for heroism beyond the call of duty.

As a distinguished, FBI trained professional with 32 years of experience, Ed Tomba has provided law enforcement leadership in key areas of a metropolitan city, including geographic and headquartered-based operations.   He is highly skilled in collaborating with civic leaders and community groups to promote goals/mission of a department, encourage safety programs and generate input from citizens, to foster mutual trust between community and police department.

Ed Tomba will bring an unprecedented wealth of experience to the city of Middleburg Heights through his various employment assignments including being a Patrolman, Vice Detective, Sergeant and Supervisor, Investigator of Internal Affairs, Officer in Charge of the Strike Force Unit, Lieutenant, Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police, Commander of the Bureau of Special Investigations, and his present assignment, Deputy Chief, Homeland Security and Special Operations.

Ed Tomba has the ability to identify challenges, implement optimal resolutions, and provide decisive leadership that will positively contribute and develop innovative approaches to the Middleburg Heights Police Department.  Over his 32 years he has built a successful career in law enforcement using his ability to quickly and accurately assess situations, identity problems and focus on strategies that obtain results.

His law enforcement experience encompasses all the facets of community and government engagement including strategic planning, budget/fiscal, risk management, administration, labor relations, and high-profile investigations.   He has also restructured, and implemented significant improvements to the Cleveland Police Department and has achieved notable recognition for his successful results, continuous efforts, high degree of competency, and exemplary leadership.

Finally, in addition to the above, Ed Tomba was the lead security planner and operation chief for the 2016 Republican National Convention held in Cleveland where he received high praise and made sure that there were no significant incidents that would have negatively impacted the greater Cleveland area.   As Ed Tomba has stated to Mayor Starr, he will offer the citizens of Middleburg Heights a highly dedicated and motivated law enforcement executive who believes in leading by example and honesty, inspiring others with integrity and holding staff accountable while rewarding employees for demonstrating ironclad integrity and outstanding performance.
