Middleburg Heights, OH (Jan. 2014)
– Nationwide, quality health care has become the topic on everyone’s mind, and it will most certainly continue to be a focus in 2014 with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. But right here in Ohio, better quality health care has never looked so good—$124 million good to be exact!

On Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, Southwest General introduced to local leaders, donors, community members and others in Greater Cleveland, the NEW Southwest General Emergency Room (ER). This 40,000-square-foot facility, part of Southwest General’s Building for Your Future expansion project, has been designed with an emphasis on quality, patient safety, privacy, efficiency and advanced technology—all in a family-centered environment.

Attendees enjoyed an evening filled with self-guided tours, entertainment, Hors d’Oeuvres by Marigold Catering as well as speeches given by hospital representatives.

“A great deal of work has gone into building this state-of-the-art space,” said Michael Cogan, chairman, Southwest Community Health Foundation Board of Trustees. “But beyond the bricks and mortar was an extensive capital campaign to help raise funds for us to ‘Touch the Future.’ We have canvased all walks of life through this campaign, and we believe that we have made tremendous strides, and hope to continue to do so in 2014.”

Bobbie Simmerman, executive director, Southwest Community Health Foundation added, “When we began the Touch the Future capital campaign, it was our goal to raise more than $7.5 million. To date, we have received more than $5.9 million, and are very grateful to everyone who has contributed. We continue to encourage those who have not donated, but would like to, to do so.”

The extension of Southwest General’s Main Campus facility will expand the outstanding quality of care that generations of local residents have relied upon Southwest General to provide. The new Emergency Room began treating patients on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. The Parker Hannifin Critical Care Unit is anticipated to open in April 2014, while completion of the Pandrangi patient bed tower is slated for Oct. 2014. The entire scope of the project is scheduled for completion in 2015.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, community members were invited for a chance to see the space first-hand.  More than 2,900 individuals attended the open house celebration, and had a chance to receive free blood pressure screenings, participate in a Teddy Bear Clinic, speak with hospital and American Heart Association representatives, and much more. Additionally, on this day, the community campaign phase of the Touch the Future capital campaign was launched.
