Remember that old prank-call kids made long ago when we were growing up? The prankster would select a random number from the White Pages (AKA: Phone Book) and ask, “Is your refrigerator running?” If the answer was yes, then the prankster would say, “Well you better go catch it!”
But for Mary Schmidt, a resident of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, her answer would be, “Yes! In fact, it’s been running for the past 83 years!”
Mary Schmidt recently won “Ohio’s Oldest Fridge” contest. The Cleveland Electric and Illuminating Company, a subsidiary of First Energy Corporation, held the contest in a successful awareness campaign to educate the public about the higher costs associated with operating older refrigerators and freezers.
First Energy’s campaign was so successful that the news of her win made it into the Wall Street Journal.
Congratulations from Mayor Gary W. Starr and all at Middleburg Heights City Hall!
